When building a cycling wheel, the Effective Rim Diameter (ERD) is an important measurement used to calculate the correct spoke lengths. A lot of rim manufacturers will list the ERD of their rims (we do too), but it is very important to know that the ERD we list, can be different from the ERD you will calculate for your specific wheel build. The short answer is because you may be using different nipples and components for your build then we use with our wheel builds. Below is information on how to properly calculate ERD, and ERD values for our FLO Rims.
What is Effective Rim Diameter?
At FLO we use the technique defined on Sheldon Brown's website to measure ERD. That technique is defined as follows:
Effective Rim Diameter (ERD) is the diameter on which you want the ends of the spokes to lie. Most people prefer it near the end of the spoke nipple. The corresponding equation and a representative figure for that definition are as follows:
ERD = A + 2BIf you want to measure your own rim (recommended, just to be sure), then follow these instructions:
- Insert two old spokes into holes exactly opposite each other on the rim. Count holes to be sure.
- Screw some nipples onto the spokes.
- Pull them tight and measure dimension A in the figure (the diameter to the edge of the nipples, where the spokes disappear into them). Do this at several spots around the rim and average the measurements.
- Measure the length of a nipple (dimension B in the figure) and add it twice (once for each nipple). The result is Effective Rim Diameter (ERD). Thus,
- ERD = A + 2B.
As you can see from the figure, if you use different nipples then we use at FLO, your ERD value could be different. As a result, we recommend that you always measure your own ERD value before building your wheels. For more specific information on how to properly complete the measurements above, we suggest you thoroughly read through Sheldon Brown's website, or take your wheels to an experienced wheel builder.
FLO ERD Values
Assuming you've read the information above, it is safe to say that you already know the values I am listing below are subject to change for your specific build. That said here are the ERD values for FLO rims, and the components we use to calculate these values.
FLO 45 Carbon Clincher: 548.4mm
FLO 60 Carbon Clincher: 513.9mm
FLO 90 Carbon Clincher: 452.3mm
FLO 30 Aluminum Clincher: 577.5mm
Spokes: Sapim 12mm Hexagonal Brass
Note: We build all FLO wheels with nipple washers and recommend you do the same. We use Sapim Oval Washers.

Order 30 - All The Details
There are currently 637 people signed up for the 600 wheels available during Order 30. Popular wheels can sell out in less than 2 minutes. We suggest being online at 9:55am PDT if you are interested in buying wheels. We are not trying to be pushy we just want to be honest.
Every wheel purchased within the first hour will receive a FREE Silca Valve Extender (FLO 60s and 90s), Continental tube (FLO 30s and 45s), or Silca FLO DISC Tool (FLO DISCS).
The best way to get ready for Order 30 is to read the "Questions About Order 30" section below. We can't thank you enough for your support and patience. If you have any questions about Order 30 please let us know.
Questions About Order 30
Q1. How and where do I place my order?
A1. The store will open at 10:00am PDT on March 31st, 2017. One hour before Order 30 starts, the store page will feature a count down timer. When the count down timer hits 00:00:00:00, refresh your browser to access the store and begin shopping!
You will need to create an account to shop in our online store. To save time during Order 30, we highly recommend creating an account before Order 30 begins. You can create your account here.
Q2. When will the wheels ship to me?
A2. Wheels will start shipping on Monday, April 10th and will take about 10 business days to complete. We expect to finish shipping all wheels by April 21, 2017. If you have questions about the shipping schedule or upcoming races, please let us know.
Q3. Do we have live up to date inventory on our site?
A3. That’s sort of a yes and no question. All wheels are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. When you select the product you will see how many are available under the “Bearings or Bearing/Build” pull down menus (The “Sticker Color” pull down does not show how many wheels are in stock.). If there is one left and you add it to your cart it does not mean you have secured the wheel. You must complete your transaction to confirm the wheel is yours. If someone else purchases the wheel before you check out, you will receive an out of stock warning when you hit the confirm order button.
Q4. My page is really slow. What should I do? (We hope this doesn’t happen!)
A4. We have done all we can to beef up our server to prevent issues. That said there are no guarantees. When you add a wheel to your cart it may take a second or two to load. Please do NOT hit the "Add to Cart" button multiple times. If you do, you will add more then one wheel to your shopping cart. If there are any technical difficulties during the sale, please be patient, we will be working to correct them as soon as humanly possible. If your page is slow after hitting the “Confirm Order” button, PLEASE DO NOT REFRESH YOUR BROWSER.
Q5. Will I get a Silca Valve Extender, Continental Tube, or Silca FLO DISC Tool?
A5. A FREE Silca Valve extender will be included with each FLO 60 and 90, a free tube will be given with each FLO 30 and FLO 45, and a free Silca FLO DISC Tool will be given with each FLO DISC purchased within the first hour.
Q6. Do you still sell wheels with ceramic bearings?
A6. We no longer offer ceramic bearings.
Q7. Do you offer Shimano/SRAM 11 speed freehub bodies and Campy freehub bodies?
A7. All of our rear wheels ship with Shimano/SRAM 8/9/10/11 speed compatible freehub bodies. They also ship with a spacer for people using Shimano/SRAM 9/10 speed cassettes.
We have an upgrade option for Campy 9/10/11 speed. If you select the upgrade option for Campy you will receive both the Campy and Shimano/SRAM freehubs.
Q8. What payment methods do you accept?
A8. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. We do not accept PayPal.
We hope that this answers your questions about Order 30. Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.
Thanks again for your patience and support.
