FLO Cycling - 2016 Bike for a Kid Update
Bike for a Kid (BFAK) has been a part of FLO Cycling since the beginning. Originally, the program was funded by the sale of ceramic bearing wheel sets. To date, each and every time we sold a set of ceramic bearing wheels, we bought a bike and helmet for a less fortunate child. The end of 2015 marked a special milestone for Bike for a Kid. We donated our 1,000th bike during our bike drop at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

With the release of our new wheel line this year, we discontinued the sale of our TPI ceramic bearings. We couldn’t prove a performance gain by using the ceramic bearings, and decided to only sell wheels with Japanese EZO stainless steel bearings. We’ve had great success with these bearings over the years and have found they perform exceptionally well.
The obvious question becomes, how will our Bike for a Kid program be funded in the future? The answer is simple. We are now donating 1% of all wheel sales towards BFAK. This may sound like a small percentage, but our financial contribution to BFAK will increase by making this change.
Where will we be donating bikes and helmets this year?
As many of you know, we have partnered with More than Sport (MTS). MTS helps organize our bike drops by finding build sites, volunteers, and the less fortunate children who receive the bikes and helmets. To cut down on costs, we decided it would be best to have two larger donations at key Ironman events this season. Our first Bike for a Kid event will take place at the Ironman 70.3 US Championships in St. George, and our second event will take place at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. At each event, we will be sharing expo space with MTS, and building bikes for several days leading up to the races. Expo attendees are encouraged to take 5-10 minutes and build a bike for a kid. If you are in the area, be sure to stop by!
I’ll leave you with our new Bike for a Kid video and a few pictures highlighting Bike for a Kid events in 2015.
